KALAMKARI TAPESTRY ~ Gorgeous Kalamkari tapestry in Dabu tradition. Background color in cream with red, blue, gold and sage accenting colors. Made of 100% power-loomed cotton offering a strong, tight, durable weave. Measures approximately 7 feet x 9 feet. They are color fast and can be machine washed on cool/gentle and tumble dried. Kalamkari is a combination of hand painting and block printing. The art of Kalamkari demands a lot of treatment before and after the painting and block printing is completed on the cotton fabric. Hence Kalamkari is a laborious and time consuming process. The Masulipatnam style of Kalamkari usually has delicate Persian motifs like trees, creepers, flowers and leaves. There's a definite Dutch influence which may be traced back to the the nineteenth century when there was great demand for Kalamkari from Europe. Today, Kalamkari is still practiced by a number of small families in and around the old fishing port of Masulipatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The intricate designs, elaborate borders and understanding of balanced composition have made Kalamkari one of the most widely imitated styles of Indian printing.
