These beautifully made bedspreads are made using a double layer of soft, cotton fabric. The heaviness coming from these two layers allows the material to fall straight and evenly on the sides, like a soft dress that slips perfectly onto a woman's body. The printing that is made on these special bedspreads is executed through what is called a resist printing process. This process makes use of a resistant substance such as gum-clay or wax that is mixed with resin and applied to the cloth. The background color of the cloth is maintained. The next stage of the process involves dipping the cloth in dye, without the color penetrating those areas which were covered in clay or wax. After the dying process is complete, the cloth is then thoroughly washed in flowing hot water to completely remove the resist. Those portions of the cloth which have retained the original background color will be block printed. The motifs typically used in the printing include Indian flora and fauna. For decorative accents, some embroidery work is done around the motifs. The trend today has blocked off plain, water-colored pastels and dull looking flowers.
